While many of the regular Exploratory session teachers were earning the school money by scratching Idaho Lottery tickets, 6th grade Exploratory students had a special whole group activity to learn about Days of the Dead or Dias de los Muertos. After a presentation of this Mexican (and Central/South American) cultural holiday, students discussed symbolism and artistic elements found in Day of the Dead folk art to create interest and mood. Students made their own “sugar skulls” out of air-dry clay and mixed media after learning about the importance of “Calavera” during the celebration. These will be incorporated into the Sage International School of Boise Art Show for Dias de los Muertos!
